Dundee - Domestic Smart Monitoring Trial
Project Overview
Together with Scottish Water, building a water-efficient future for Dundee
Water is our most precious resource and Scottish Water is working hard to keep our water services as sustainable as possible.
As part of our Piped by Us, Owned by You initiative, we're launching Scotland's first Domestic Smart Monitoring trial.
The three year project will see Dundee leading the way in helping Scotland understand how we can become a water efficient nation.
Residents in the north-west of the city are at the forefront of a new way of defining our relationship with the water we need and use to become as sustainable as possible.
This domestic smart monitoring trial could pave the way for 2.6 million homes to be better informed and equipped to use only the water they need, reduce waste and protect the environment.
We all own Scotland's water. So if your home is part of this trial you can play an owner's part, contributing to a sustainable future for Dundee and beyond. Together we can protect Scotland's water for generations to come.

Get to Know Your Water Flow
We're carrying out a trial using domestic smart monitors at homes like these in north-west Dundee to help customers better understand how much water they need, make smarter choices to reduce waste, and protect our resources for the future
Why are we doing this?
We're carrying out this research trial to safeguard our precious natural resources.
With rising demand and more areas at risk of water shortages, Scottish Water is exploring new ways to address these challenges.
The domestic smart monitor trial has been developed to better understand water use within individual homes in Scotland.
The benefits of smart monitors are:
- Track daily water use: gain insight into your daily water consumption with accurate data and make informed decisions about your water use
- Leak detection alerts: identify and fix leaks faster, reducing water waste and keeping your water supply reliable - it's Piped by Us and Owned by You
- Sustainable Water Use: help create a more sustainable future by only using what you need and ensuring we value every drop

What are we doing?
Dundee was chosen for the trial as it represents a diverse cross-section of Scottish housing, making it an ideal testing ground for innovative solutions.
We will install around 2,300 domestic smart monitors at homes in the northwest area of Dundee to find out if providing homeowners with regular information about their water use would significantly reduce domestic demand.
Each monitor will align to an individual home and will download water use information once a day. Customers will then be able to see their water use via a computer or mobile device.
The information will help customers make small changes which could save a lot of water over time, reduce leakage, and lower home energy bills.
Most properties selected to take part already have a boundary box, but we need to install around 400 boundary boxes at older properties. We are using monitors at older properties to assess the level of leakage within the boundaries of these types of homes, in addition to providing customers with data on water use.
North West Dundee
We've selected homes from this area to take part in the first domestic smart monitoring trial to better understand how much water we all use in our homes
When are we doing it?
Installation of the monitors will begin in Spring 2025.
An extensive campaign to inform and promote the research trial has been launched which will include press, town hall public meetings, by post, and information events in local communities that have been selected to take part in the trial.
Customers whose homes have been selected will be able to opt out of taking part in the trial, and further information on this is available within our FAQ section.
