Stage 3 - Repair Underway

Posted: Tuesday 4th February - 15:00hrs

Customers in the G41 area of the southside of Glasgow may be experiencing an interruption to supply today as a result of three localised burst water mains on St Andrews Crescent, St Andrews Road, and Maxwell Drive/Darnley Street and our teams are underway to carry out the necessary repairs.

Customers will be aware that on Saturday 1st of February, a 27-inch strategic water main burst on Pollokshaws Road, which caused a water outage to nearly 6,500 customers. The vast size of the main meant the burst caused flooding to the area, resulting in severe damage to the roads, and a full reinstatement and clean-up is now underway. Emergency teams worked tirelessly across the weekend to ensure the damage to the water main was fixed and all customer supplies were restored.

As part of our recovery, complex valve operations were carried out to re-route water through different parts of our network which brought customers back into supply. However, such significant disruption to our assets has since caused a number of small diameter bursts to occur on more localised parts of the network. Since then, we have had our teams in the area regulating and maintaining our PRVs (pressure reducing valves) to protect the network and minimise further impact.

Our teams have made progress onsite and have now completed work at St Andrews Road, with the main now recharging. The burst at St Andrews Drive has been isolated and is causing no customer impact. Repairs are ongoing to Maxwell Drive/Darnley Street, with traffic management in place, and efforts continuing to restore service.

Our priority is to ensure customers are supported during this difficult period and we appreciate that a number of customers have been impacted on more than one occasion since Saturday. Our customer care team are on hand to respond to any bottled water requests and are also ensuring our PSR (Priority Service Register) customers are contacted directly.

As operations are ongoing, customers may experience fluctuating periods of no water, low pressure, and/or discoloured water. If you experience discoloured water, please run your cold kitchen tap only at half pressure until the water runs clear.

Traffic Management

A road closure will remain in place for Pollokshaws Road between the junctions of Maxwell Road and Albert Drive for the remainder of this week. Diversions will be in place to ensure the safety of all road users while our teams carry out essential reinstatement work on the large area affected by the burst water main. This will allow the ground to properly settle before the road is safely reopened.

With the additional burst main on Maxwell Road/Darnley Street today, we have installed four-way traffic lights to allow our teams to carry out the repair as quickly and as safely as possible. We appreciate this is a further inconvenience as the diversion route on Pollokshaws Road and the four-way traffic lights to repair the burst are interlinked, causing further congestion, which we’d like to apologise for.

Please allow extra time for journeys through this area and take care while following all signage and diversion routes.

If driving Northbound (A77) the diversion starts at the junction with Coplaw Street and ends at the junction with Devon Street. We are aware this involves a bus route however Glasgow City Council have approved this diversion route and there will be no penalties for drivers using it during this time.

If driving Southbound the diversion starts at the junction with Devon Street and ends at the junction with Calder Street.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this issue and thank affected customers for their continued patience and understanding whilst we worked to resolve the matter.

Interruption to supply

When we are doing maintenance or repairs to the water network, you may experience cloudy or discoloured water. This video explains what to do if you are affected.

Burst Water Main FAQs

We are very sorry you have experienced an unplanned interruption to your water supply. In this event it is always our priority to restore the supply as soon as possible, regardless of the scale of the disruption. An unplanned interruption to your water supply is normally caused by a water mains pipe bursting on our network. We proactively manage our vast network of pipes, however unforeseen bursts do sometimes occur.
A water mains pipe burst can vary in size or complexity and other factors, such as traffic management or the location of the burst can affect the time to repair the pipe. The location and elevation of your property on our water network can also influence how soon the water will be restored to your property - for example the burst pipe may be repaired, but water has to recharge throughout the network. This means that properties at a higher elevation and/or further distance from the burst may take longer to receive full restoration of supply and pressure.
We update information on our website and social media channels on both Twitter and Facebook.
For households with combination boiler systems (normally operated without the need for a hot water storage unit) the central heating system should continue to operate as normal. However a hot water system, which is normally fed directly from the mains water supply, will not operate until the water supply is restored.
We usually restore water supplies within a reasonable time. However, if we are unable to do so, we will provide alternative water supplies.
Scottish Water has a confidential service for Priority Services Customers that customers with additional needs can sign up to free of charge. Customers who require additional assistance may include the elderly, young children or those with a disability or medical condition that requires a constant supply of water. Discoloured Water FAQs

If you notice any unusual taste and odour, please contact us so we can carry out the necessary investigations to resolve this for you as soon as possible. For more information please see our factsheet: Colour, taste and odour explained.

If the water from your cold kitchen tap (or any other mains fed tap) suddenly becomes discoloured, this could be because some maintenance or repair work is being carried out on our network in your area. If we have not informed you of any work being carried out, please contact us for more details. If we are not working in your area, we will investigate the cause of discolouration for you and let you know. For more information please see our factsheet: Colour, taste and odour explained.

In most cases discoloured water is not harmful and can be cleared by running the first incoming cold water tap (usually in the kitchen) at a trickle until it clears. Very occasionally customers have noticed "tiny particles" or "bits" in their tap water. This can be caused by planned or unplanned work to the water supply network which causes natural sediment in the pipes to shift (quite often this is a dark red, brown colour).

Small dark grey or black particles can occasionally be caused if your pipework is made from lead. This is most likely if your house was built before 1970. For more information see our Lead and Your Water pages.
