Holly Henderson
Management Trainee, Scottish Water
She’s now a Management Trainee and her story shows how apprenticeships can really change lives, as we celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2025.
Holly started as a Modern Apprentice in Development Operations at Scottish Water. Loving the positive experience and welcoming environment, she decided to continue with the apprenticeship route instead of going to university.
During her Modern Apprenticeship, she gained essential skills and confidence by working on real projects and collaborating with people at different levels of the company.
She said: “I didn't know what to expect, but I immediately felt welcomed.
“I didn’t even realise you could do an apprenticeship in an office environment. I always thought apprenticeships were for trades like plumbing or electrical work. But after my experience, I saw the potential for growth in ways I hadn’t imagined.
“My team was incredibly supportive, allowing me to grow quickly.”
After finishing her Modern Apprenticeship, Holly moved on to a Graduate Apprenticeship, balancing work with study. This enabled her to apply what she learned directly to her job.
She added: “The Graduate Apprenticeship let me apply what I was learning immediately."
Holly's hard work paid off, and she joined the Management Trainee Programme.
Holly said it's not about choosing one path over another, it's about choosing the right path for you.
She said: “Apprenticeships are about more than technical skills. They build confidence and communication.”
She now encourages others to consider an apprenticeship, showcasing the benefits of hands-on learning and earning a wage.
Looking ahead, Holly is excited about her future at Scottish Water and the career growth opportunities.
She said “As a Management Trainee, I’m constantly learning and looking forward to the next steps in my career.”
