Sewer repair project

Work to repair the sewer pipe which runs underneath the harbour is set to start in June.

Work to repair a sewer running underneath the pier at Thurso harbour will get underway in June, Scottish Water has advised.

The project follows emergency repair work which was carried out last year due to the pipe’s deteriorating condition and will involve lining the inside of the pipe and replacing some of the metal cross beams currently securing it to the pier. New metal cross beams will also be installed above the pipe to further secure it to the pier.

The project team, alongside contractor MacAuley Askernish, will be setting up at the site from Monday, June 3, with work getting underway the following week and anticipated to be on-going until October. During this time, the pier itself will be cordoned off and there will be single lane traffic in operation on Riverside Road.

Project manager Tom Hannan said: “It is essential that we complete this work to ensure the sewer network can continue to serve customers in the local area and protect the environment.

“We know this is a well-used area of the town and our team will do all they can to minimise any disruption caused by the work. We would like to thank residents and road users in advance for their understanding and patience while we complete these repairs.”

While the lining of the pipe is being carried out, over-pumping of the affected section of the sewer network will be required for around four weeks via a temporary pipe which will run along a section of Riverside Road.

Resurfacing work along Riverside Road will also take place at the end of the project in October following investigatory work that was carried out regarding the possible relocation of the sewer.
